![]() With a 120 Hz screen, the Blade 17 is also perfectly poised to run games at 4K settings. It's hard to overstate just how deep the blacks and just how vibrant the colors look on this 4K OLED screen. The bigger difference is qualitative: an OLED screen simply looks better most of the time, particularly for dark images that require subtle contrast. Granted, the Blade 17 is not quite as colorful as the Vector Pro, or as color-accurate as either machine (a lower delta-E means better color accuracy), but there's not a tremendous difference in benchmarks. So I just wanted to put this out there as I'm starting to see more posts (and complaints) about mini-LED displays here, like from the Razer Blade 16.Compared against the similarly powerful Maingear Vector Pro and Razer's other heavy hitter, the Razer Blade Advanced 15, the Blade 17 more than holds its own, offering the best brightness of the three, and a better coverage of the sRGB spectrum than the Blade 15. I talk more about this in my review on the 2022 Asus ROG Flow X16, which was the first gaming laptop to have a high-refresh mini-LED display, although it only had 512 local dimming zones for the 2022 model and now 1,0. This gives you that awesome mini-LED contrast and brightness, but with small drawbacks mentioned above. This allows for much better color accuracy and consistency in brightness across the entire display.Īrmoury Crate's description for when the laptop is in multi-zone mode. There are many people I talked to who considered returning their laptops before they found this switch.Īrmoury Crate's multi-zone/single-zone toggle switch gives you the ability to make the entire panel act more like a typical IPS display with a single-zone backlight. This is ESSENTIAL for those working with color-sensitive work like photo/video editing, or just for those who are easily bothered by splotchiness/blooming. What this does is makes the dimming zones to operate as one "big" zone, similar to a typical IPS panel, but while still being able to enjoy most of the high-brightness goodness that mini-LED offers. As far as I know from asking around, Asus is currently the ONLY manufacturer that includes this toggle with their laptops. Asus has a multi-zone/single-zone dimming toggle in Armoury Crate (see below). This is a bit of an exaggerated scenario as it looks worse on camera, but at low brightness you can see some splotchiness on the gray background as well as some darkness spilling over from the black background onto the gray.Īt high brightness, especially in HDR while playing games, it is much harder to see or notice this blooming effect.īut here's the game-changer. If you've had a TV with full-array local dimming (FALD) you may have seen something similar to this before. ![]() The multi-zone dimming technology can cause some “splotchiness” on certain gray backgrounds (see below) or a little bit of brightness blooming over from a dark object onto a bright one (or vice versa), which tends to get worse at lower brightness levels. BUT of course there is a small drawback, and that’s mostly in the blooming and loss of some color accuracy with the 1,024 local dimming zones. There is a huge difference in contrast and brightness between these screens and typical IPS displays. Hey everyone, so as you all know almost every manufacturer is releasing at least one gaming laptop with a mini-LED display this year.
